Program Summary

From the underlying substantive law to practical aspects of asset protection, you will learn how to keep your assets from plaintiffs, creditors or an agency of the federal government. We’ll review planning strategies and solutions, including planning with community property, use of domestic and off shore business entities, domestic and foreign trusts, equity strips, private retirement plans and many other. We will look at how to protect assets in a troubled economy from lenders and landlords holding personal guarantees and how to plan after a lawsuit, a default or an accident. The discussion will focus on the various ways to protect common assets, such as houses, bank and brokerage accounts, businesses and professional practices and retirement plans.

Jacob Stein, Esq. is the managing partner of Aliant, LLP. He specializes in international tax planning, creative business and private wealth transactions, and asset protection. Mr. Stein received his law degree from the University of Southern California, and a Master of Laws in Taxation from Georgetown University. He is ranked in the Chambers and Partners High Net Worth Guide, holds an AV-rating from Martindale-Hubbell®, has been named a Super Lawyer® by the Los Angeles Magazine for over ten years, and is listed in the top 1% of ‘America’s Most Honored Professionals’ by the American Registry. Mr. Stein was recently awarded a TEP designation as a full member.

Over the course of his career, Mr. Stein has represented officers and directors of Fortune 500 companies, high-pro-le entrepreneurs, celebrities, high net-worth individuals, private equity funds, and some of the world’s most prominent families.

He is the author of books, dozens of scholarly articles, and technical manuals. His most recent article, “Creative Planning Strategies Using Irrevocable Trusts,” was published January 2020 in Thomson Reuters Estate Planning Journal. Other recent works published in the Journal of Taxation include “Tax Tips for Americans Doing Business in South America” (2019), and “Foreign Investment in U.S. Real Estate” (2019). Books authored by Mr. Stein include A Lawyer’s Guide to Asset Protection Planning in California, Second Edition; International Joint Ventures – A Concise Guide for Attorneys & Business Owners; and Asset Protection for California Residents, Second Edition, the -first and only book in print on asset protection planning specific to California residents that provides a sophisticated and in-depth look at the law in an accessible manner.

Mr. Stein was an adjunct professor of taxation at the CSU, Northridge Graduate Tax Program for ten years. He lectures frequently to attorneys, CPAs and other professional groups, teaching over 50 seminars per year for state and local bar associations, estate planning councils, and international networking organizations. Mr. Stein is an instructor with the California CPA Education Foundation, Thomson Reuters, the Rossdale Group, Lorman Education Services, Spidell Publishing, and many more. Mr. Stein is a member of several international legal networks, including Union Internationale des Avocats, IR Global, and the International Bar Association. He is also the current Global Chairman of the Aliant Verein.
