Program Summary
During this program, attorneys will learn how the American Bar Association's Standing Committee on Ethics and Professional Responsibility views a lawyer’s obligations when working with clients with whom the lawyer does not share a common language or with clients with whom the lawyer's communication may be impeded due to a client's hearing, speech, or vision disability. The program will go through the ABA’s recent guidance and analyze some of the relevant Rules of Professional Conduct implicated – Rules 1.4, 1.1, 8.4 and 5.3. It will also analyze ethics opinions that have grappled with a lawyer’s obligation to supervise experts and provide practical tips for compliance.

Deepika Ravi is a partner with the law firm of Harris, Wiltshire & Grannis LLP. Ms. Ravi focuses her practice on legal ethics, civil litigation and investigations, and privacy and data security.
Legal Ethics
Ms. Ravi helps lawyers and law firms understand and comply with their legal ethics obligations. She counsels clients on ethical restrictions on the practice of law and represents attorneys in disciplinary proceedings. Her experience includes providing advice on ethical issues surrounding partner departures and helping clients evaluate the merits of legal malpractice claims, including competency and conflicts of interest issues. Ms. Ravi has experience advising and representing clients who have received inquiries from the District of Columbia Committee on Unauthorized Practice of Law.
Ms. Ravi is a frequent speaker and writer on evolving issues in legal ethics and serves as a co-chair of the Professional Responsibility Committee of the Federal Communications Bar Association. She also serves as an adjunct professor of law, teaching professional responsibility at the Georgetown University Law Center.
Civil Litigation and Investigations
Ms. Ravi represents individuals and companies in complex commercial litigation and general civil litigation in federal and state courts and has served as both defense and plaintiff’s counsel. Ms. Ravi’s experience ranges from helping individuals pursue civil rights claims, to representing telecommunications companies in intercarrier compensation disputes.
Ms. Ravi also conducts internal investigations in response to government enforcement actions and anticipated civil litigation. She has represented companies in investigations and inquiries by the Department of Justice, the Federal Trade Commission, and the Federal Communications Commission, including those related to privacy and data security, communications and information technology, consumer protection law, and corporate compliance.
Privacy and Data Security
Ms. Ravi leverages her experience in privacy, data security, and corporate compliance-related investigations to advise companies on their obligations and legal risk associated with the collection, use, and disclosure of personal information. She helps clients understand how state and federal regulations intersect and interact with each other and with international regulatory regimes, and counsels’ clients on how to develop comprehensive data protection compliance programs. Ms. Ravi also helps clients navigate data security risk assessment and data management issues.
Ms. Ravi maintains an active pro bono practice, assisting clients on a broad range of matters. Her pro bono experience includes voting rights, immigration, and domestic violence representation. Ms. Ravi also volunteers her time to help individuals navigate the legal process required to update their name and gender marker on identity documents.
Ms. Ravi earned her J.D. with pro bono distinction from Stanford Law School. She earned her B.A., summa cum laude, from Duke University, where she received the William J. Griffith University Service Award.
Ms. Ravi serves as HWG’s Diversity Partner. She also serves as co-chair of the South Asian Bar Association of D.C.’s Partners’ Circle, and formerly served on the association’s Board of Directors. She is a member of the Junior Board for the D.C. Volunteer Lawyers Project, and a former co-chair of the Federal Communications Bar Association’s Diversity Committee.

Hilary Gerzhoy is a partner with the law firm of Harris, Wiltshire & Grannis LLP, where she serves as Vice-Chair of the firm’s Legal Ethics and Malpractice group. She focuses her practice on legal ethics, civil litigation, and government investigations.
Legal Ethics and Malpractice
Ms. Gerzhoy represents lawyers and law firms in disciplinary investigations and prosecutions. She has handled matters in front of D.C.’s Board on Professional Responsibility, the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office’s Office of Enrollment and Discipline, D.C.’s Committee on Unauthorized Practice of Law, and the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia’s Committee on Grievances, among others.
Ms. Gerzhoy serves on the D.C. Bar Rules of Professional Conduct Review Committee which reviews the Rules of Professional Conduct for possible revisions and amendments. She also serves as an adjunct professor of law, teaching professional responsibility at the Georgetown University Law Center. Ms. Gerzhoy writes frequently on developments in legal ethics and her work has been published by Bloomberg Law, Law360, and Jurist, among others. In 2020, she worked as part of the Ethics and Compliance Team for the Biden-Harris Presidential transition.
Litigation, Government Investigations, and Criminal Defense
Ms. Gerzhoy represents plaintiffs and defendants in civil and criminal litigation matters. She has represented clients through all stages of litigation from the initial complaint through discovery and trial in both state and federal courts.
Ms. Gerzhoy also represents companies and individuals in civil and white-collar criminal investigations and prosecutions. She has represented companies responding to federal regulatory investigations and enforcement actions, as well as individuals in a range of white-collar criminal investigations. Her representations include investigations by the Department of Justice, the New York Attorney General, the D.C. Attorney General, the FCC, and other federal administrative agencies.
Ms. Gerzhoy maintains an active pro bono practice, assisting clients on a broad range of civil and criminal matters. She has dedicated substantial time to representing victims of domestic violence in matters before the D.C. Superior Court. She has also successfully represented low-income tenants fighting eviction in landlord-tenant cases. She currently serves on the Membership Committee of the District of Columbia’s Women’s Bar Association and has served on the Junior Board of the D.C. Volunteer Lawyers Project.
Prior to joining Harris, Wiltshire & Grannis, Ms. Gerzhoy was an associate at Kellogg, Hansen, Todd, Figel & Frederick, PLLC, where her practice focused on commercial and appellate litigation.
Before entering private practice, Ms. Gerzhoy clerked for the Honorable Kermit V. Lipez of the United States Court of Appeals for the First Circuit. She received her J.D. from the University of California Berkeley School of Law (Boalt Hall), where she served as Online Editor of the California Law Review and a teaching assistant for the Legal Research and Writing Program, and where she received the Prosser Award for Written and Oral Advocacy. She received her B.A. from the University of Chicago, graduating Phi Beta Kappa.
