Session I - Preserving the Home and Protecting the Spouse: A comprehensive guide to Medicaid planning for attorneys – Terry Garrett

This session provides attorneys with an analysis of Medicaid planning strategies for preserving the home and protecting the spouse. The session covers the basics of Medicaid, including its funding, administration, and benefits, as well as the eligibility requirements and application process. Attorneys will learn how to navigate the complex world of Medicaid planning, including the use of Transfer on Death Deeds, Lady Bird Deeds, and Qualified Income Trusts to avoid Medicaid Estate Recovery. The session also explores the importance of planning for the high probability of needing Medicaid benefits and how failing to do so can impose a greater burden on the applicant and their family, as well as the Medicaid program.

Session II - Aging, Healthcare, and Financial Planning: Mitigating the crisis – Kyla G. Kelym

So many people are living longer that it is almost inevitable that a healthcare crisis will occur that will land them in dire need of serious care, that costs a lot of money. As people are living better longer, many are working well past traditional retirement age and the mindset is that no planning is necessary for longer, which almost ensures a crisis will occur. Learn how to identify the crisis and devise strategies for you and your client to take control of the situation and provide alternatives to letting inertia take its course.

Mrs. Kelim provides consultation and advocacy for older Americans, their families, caregivers and professionals. The firm and aims to protect their clients’ life’s work by proactive planning and assisting those in need due to catastrophic illness or injury as they navigate the often-treacherous administrative schemes of nursing home Medicaid, Medicare and Social Security. Mrs. Kelim provides consultations throughout the Southeast United States. She is a prolific speaker and has practiced in Alabama and Florida for 31 years. Mrs. Kelim earned her B.S. degree from the University of New Orleans and her J.D. degree from Cumberland School of Law at Samford University in Birmingham, Alabama.

She lives in Fairhope with her husband, Patrick and their two sons, Payton and Pierce.
