Nicholas Ryan is an attorney in Grand Rapids whose practice focuses on the areas of estate planning, probate, and elder law. He received his B.A. from Boston College in 2011, his J.D. from Notre Dame Law School in 2014, and was sworn into the Michigan State Bar in January of 2015.

Session I - 2022 Medicare Secondary Payer Update – Christine Hummel
This CLE will provide an overview of the Medicare Secondary Payer Act (MSP). All three statutory requirements will be discussed: ensuring that Medicare remains secondary to settlement proceeds; reimbursement of Medicare’s conditional payment amount; and Section 111 reporting. In addition, the course will discuss the impact of the PAID act and the new civil money penalty for failure to comply with the Section 111 reporting requirement. Finally, the course will examine possible upcoming changes to the MSP and how those changes may impact settlements and settlement negotiations.

Session II – Qualifying Clients for Nursing Home Care – Nicholas Ryan
This CLE will address qualifying a client for Medicaid services. The presentation will first discuss the basic Medicaid rules on asset and income planning when it comes to Medicaid strategies. This presentation will also touch on what asset and income planning techniques are allowed under the Medicaid program. Next, the course will cover the spousal protections afforded under the Medicaid for a married couple and what asset and income planning techniques are available when only one spouse needs Medicaid. Finally, the course will examine what options are available to single applicants in need of Medicaid services.

Christine is the President and founder of Hummel Consultation Services, a legal consultation practice specializing in the application of the Medicare Secondary Payer Act. With over twenty years of experience, Christine is a published author and popular speaker on a wide array of topics related to Medicare compliance. Christine has significant experience working with the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services in regarding applicability of the Medicare Secondary Payer Act to liability settlements. She is a member of the American Bar Association, the Colorado Bar Association, and includes with her legal experience work in Medicaid, probate, and elder law. Christine volunteers her free time by giving presentations on the roles of women throughout multiple time periods in history.

Nicholas Ryan is an attorney in Grand Rapids whose practice focuses on the areas of estate planning, probate, and elder law. He received his B.A. from Boston College in 2011, his J.D. from Notre Dame Law School in 2014, and was sworn into the Michigan State Bar in January of 2015.
Nicholas accepted a position at Dellenbusch & Ryan, PLC in February of 2016. As an attorney at Dellenbusch & Ryan, Nicholas meets with elderly and middle-aged clients to assist them with their estate planning and Medicaid planning needs, including drafting hundreds of estate planning documents, such as special needs trusts and ladybird deeds. In addition, Nicholas has also represented clients in probate court hearings for guardianship and conservatorship proceedings.
