Session II - Ethical Referral Fees: a 50 State Survey – Curt Brown

When done correctly, fee sharing is not only ethical–it leads to better outcomes for clients. This program will survey the various regulatory frameworks utilized by states concerning referral fees with the goal of providing lawyers with working understanding of how to employ this tool to benefit their clients and grow their practice.

Stacey Burke is a 23-year attorney who provides marketing and business development consulting services to law firms. She has worked with over 400 law firms in a wide range of practice areas across the United States. She litigated in the field of consumer advocacy before transitioning to a consulting career 11 years ago. She has won legal industry accolades, including the President’s Award from the Houston Bar Association and has been selected as a Texas Super Lawyers Rising Star and Super Lawyer. Her work has also been published in the Texas Bar Journal, Trial magazine, Houston Lawyer magazine, Authority magazine, Forbes, Entrepreneur, and Legal Business World. Her consulting company won the American Marketing Association Crystal Awards for Online Marketing in Google Analytics and for Print Collateral or Direct Marketing: Company or Organization Brochure.

Courtney is currently a licensed Texas attorney and certified mediator who works as a Research Attorney at Jackson Walker LLP in their Houston office. She obtained her Bachelor of Science degree in Political Science with a minor in Business from Texas A&M University in College Station, TX in 2003, her Juris Doctorate from Thurgood Marshall School of Law in Houston, TX in 2009, and has a certificate in Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion from Cornell University. She is the Chair of the Black Lawyer Resource Group at her firm and is also the voice of her law firm podcast, JW Fast takes, a 7-10 min monthly podcast featuring JW attorneys on a variety of topics and emerging legal issues. She is also a regular guest on her firm Future Ready Business podcast where they discuss the future of the legal profession.

Outside of work, Courtney is a board member of the Ivy Educational and Charitable Foundation of Houston, Founder of Courthousecouture® a fashion and lifestyle social blog that has over 70,000 followers across social media platforms, and she is also a member of the Alpha Kappa Omega graduate chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated in Houston, TX where she is the chair of the Public Policy forum, Chair of the Debutante Mentor Committee, and on the Epsilon Lambda Graduate Council.
