Program Summary

Session I - Smart Tech, Sound Systems: Creating a Paperless Practice Without Reinventing the Wheel – Lauren Scardella

This session covers the practical decisions lawyers must make when transitioning to a paperless or fully remote and paperless law practice. The session examines a realistic technology stack, including document management, cloud storage, practice management software, e-signature tools, scanning solutions, and secure legacy systems that many firms already own but underutilize. It also addresses staffing considerations, such as training existing or new staff, redefining roles in a digital workflow, and determining when virtual or hybrid support is appropriate. Finally, participants will learn how to evaluate whether a paperless in-office model or a remote, paperless practice best aligns with their practice area, client expectations, risk tolerance, and long-term growth goals.

Key topics to be discussed:

  • How to make the transition to a paperless office if you're still using paper systems
  • Creating a technology stack
  • How to choose whether your practice should be a brick-and-mortar operation or a remote operation

Session II - Paperless Law Practice Tips for Litigators – Tom O'Connor

Computer technology shows up in almost every aspect of modern litigation. Electronic practice systems and workflows abound from initial strategy, client communications, research and analytics, briefing, filing with courts and presentation systems at trial: all are now part of the paperless practice landscape. Paperless technology, used well, makes the entire litigation process faster, more efficient and transparent.

Key topics to be discussed:

  • AI Evidence
  • Document management systems
  • Electronic communication
  • eDiscovery

In 2025, Ms. Scardella successfully transitioned her New Jersey-based practice to a fully remote model while relocating to Arizona, relying on a carefully structured technology stack, cloud-based systems, and streamlined digital workflows to maintain compliance, productivity, and client service. A frequent CLE speaker and co-editor of Municipal Court Practice for NJICLE, she brings practical, real-world insight into implementing paperless systems, training staff in digital workflows, and evaluating whether a remote or in-office paperless model best serves a law practice.
