Program Summary

Mental illness and substance abuse issues are an inevitable part of almost any family law practice. However, no matter how frequently these issues come up, no case is ever the same. It is important to be able to know as much as we can about these issues in order to brainstorm the best solution for each unique situation. This course will delve into various aspects crucial for legal practitioners working in this domain. It will cover topics such as recognizing signs of mental health disorders or substance use and abuse in clients or in opposing parties, testing and evaluations and strategies for dealing with these issues both early on and later in a case. We will discuss the impact of these issues on child and property related issues and collaboration with experts and professionals when dealing with these issues.

This course is co-sponsored with myLawCLE.

Key topics to be discussed:

  • Drug Testing and Diagnosis of Mental Health Disorders
  • Treatment options before, during and after a case
  • Litigation strategies on each side and possible solutions
  • Best use of experts
