Program Summary

Two hours, two professions, one case file

This two-hour course is proof that doctors and lawyers can collaborate. Attorney Rachel V. Rose — who advises on healthcare, cybersecurity, and qui tam matters and teaches bioethics at Baylor College of Medicine — co-presents with Dr. Matthew C. Starke, a board-certified, trauma-fellowship-trained orthopedic surgeon who has trained and worked at some of the busiest trauma centers in the country.

The course opens on the legal side of medical litigation: procedural and evidentiary issues, the types of experts, privacy laws, and artificial intelligence considerations. From there, the surgeon takes over: musculoskeletal anatomy and the related nerves and vessels, positioning and imaging options, diagnostic tests, and first-hand case studies of common orthopedic injuries and trauma.

Attendees leave speaking enough of each other’s language to be effective — understanding clinical nomenclature in legal proceedings and avoiding the landmines that come with medical records, experts, and AI.

Key topics to be discussed:

  • Musculoskeletal Fundamentals
The fundamentals of the musculoskeletal system and the related nerves and vessels.
  • Positioning and Imaging
Appreciating positioning and imaging options, and the diagnostic tests that drive orthopedic findings.
  • Injuries and Trauma, First-Hand
Common orthopedic injuries and trauma, understood through first-hand case studies.
  • Clinical Nomenclature for Lawyers
Why lawyers need to understand clinical nomenclature in order to be effective in legal proceedings.
  • Litigation Mechanics
Procedural and evidentiary issues, the types of experts, and the privacy laws that govern medical litigation.
  • Legal Landmines: Records, Experts, and AI
Avoiding legal landmines when using medical records, experts, and artificial intelligence.

This course is co-sponsored with myLawCLE.
