This presentation is designed to teach attorneys and investigators about the injuries that can result from Abusive Head Trauma (AHT), formerly known as Shaken Baby Syndrome. This presentation also covers related injuries such as fractures and retinal hemorrhages, and medical conditions that can mimic AHT. The purpose of this presentation is to assist attorneys and investigators with a basic understanding AHT. Forensic nurse evaluation of AHT cases will be discussed throughout the presentation.

Jessica Curci has been an RN for 11 years, gaining a wide variety of experience; including pediatric nursing, intensive care nursing, pre- and post-anesthesia, and forensic nursing including sexual assault, intimate partner violence, elder abuse, child abuse, and strangulation. She has a Master of Science Degree in Nursing from the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Nursing, and is currently clinically active as a forensic nurse examiner in Virginia. Jessica has been consulting on criminal cases with Godoy Medical Forensics since 2022. Jessica has attended multiple conferences and educational sessions on abusive head trauma, child abuse, sexual assault, intimate partner violence, medicolegal death investigation, and general forensic science.
