Program Summary

With the complex maze of state and federal laws and regulations, very few attorneys, prosecutors and even judges know what types of firearms are lawful under state and federal law or when an individual becomes prohibited from purchasing, possessing and/or owning firearms and ammunition, let alone what relief mechanisms may or may not exist. For this reason, the judiciary is now, more than ever, turning to a handful of attorneys in each state - attorneys who have demonstrated an absolute command of the state and federal firearms laws and a reputation for forthright discussion and explanation of whether or not an individual is prohibited and what relief mechanisms may exist – for guidance on how to handle these matters, even when the attorney is not involved in the pending matter before the court. Join us as we examine this complex maze and provide you with insight into all of these issues and more!

This course is co-sponsored with myLawCLE.

Key topics to be discussed:

  • What types of firearms can be owned under federal law? Machine guns, silencers, and destructive devices
  • What types of criminal convictions trigger federal firearm disabilities?
  • Can non-convictions and non-criminally related events trigger federal firearm disabilities?
  • The options that exist for relief from a federal firearm disability, including Second Amendment as applied challenges
